Muscle Pain
The word muscle as an organ is used to describe the set of skeletal tissues that are responsible for motion of bones which as well exhibits sensory capabilities.
Every human being, at some point exhibits sore or aching muscles.
Pain of the muscle, also referred to as myalgia, could range from mild to really excruciating. Although in most cases this pain goes away in a few hours, in some of the cases it could linger for a longer period, say months. One can exhibit muscle pain in any part of the body including the neck, back, legs and also the hands. However that shouldn’t be a cause of worry to you since we, Dr. Tom, is an expert with the know-how around any kind of muscle pain.
Pain of the muscle is most commonly caused by stress, tension, overuse and minor injuries. Muscle pain is often localized and as such it affects one or several muscles in your body.
Some of the symptoms you would exhibit when suffering from muscle pain include:
- Trouble breathing or dizziness
- Extreme muscle weakness
- A high fever and stiff neck
- A tick bite or rash
- Muscle pain, especially in your calves, that occurs with exercise and resolves with rest
- Signs of infection, such as redness and swelling, around a sore muscle
- Muscle pain after you start taking or increase the dosage of a medication
- Muscle pain that lasts longer than a week
Some of the known factors that cause muscle pain include:
- Stress
- Nutritional deficit
- Hormonal disorders
- Psychological and psychiatric disorders
- Latent response to trauma
- Sleep deficiencies
- Diseases, infections and hereditary conditions like chronic exertional compartment syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, Claudication, Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), Dermatomyositis, Dystonia, Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism (a thyroid disorder), Influenza (flu), Lupus, Lyme disease, Myofascial pain syndrome, Polymyalgia rheumatica etc
- Inadequate physical activity
Dr. Tom performs diagnosis on muscle pain by the use of high-tech ultrasound machines as well as the application of clinical diagnosis that will involve the intervention of one of our experienced and highly skilled physicians.
Treatment of muscle pain can be performed at home but if the symptoms persist, we recommend that you visit a physician.
Dr. Tom performs clinical treatments involving either the manual techniques of muscle relaxation or extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). However, he usually performs a sound diagnosis before any treatment is done.
Home treatment involves simple oral techniques meant to relieve pain of the muscle caused by minor injuries, stress or even exercise. In case the injury is severe, one should seek medical assistance.
The most common effect projected from muscle pain caused by a certain activity is usually a sharp feeling of a “pulled” or in clinical terms, strained muscle.
There’s an articulated formula for dealing with such injuries, commonly referred to as R.I.C.E. therapy:
- Rest: Take a short breather away from usual activities.
- Ice: Involves placing an ice pack or even bag of frozen peas on the sore region for a given period of time between 15 to 20 minutes thrice a day.
- Compression: Wrap a compression bandage round the sore region to reduce swelling.
- Elevation: Elevation of the feet helps reduce swelling
